The Desire for Change

A society whose foundation is not based in love cannot truly be democratic. Toward this end men and women everywhere

must now strive.

Within the collective Heart of this nation

the desire for change is building,

the desire that those who feel left behind

within an economy that enriches some at

the expense of others shall no longer be left behind;

the desire that those whose voices have not

been heard or respected in relation to their

sacred lands and culture shall now be

heard and respected;

the desire that those who were brought

to this country as slaves and who have been

granted equal status under the law,

shall now, finally, be treated as equal under the law

and also within the social fabric of society.

The desire for change is based on a

fundamental shift within the human heart

that recognizes the virtue that has been lacking,

and wishes to repair the damage that has

been done as a result of this lack.

Such a shift may take a false direction

before it takes a true one.

It may stumble and falter along the way,

absorbing half-truths as if they were entirely true,

and false hopes as if they were solidly based.

Yet, in the end, the desire for change

will awaken within each heart which will want

what is best for itself and all others.

It will no longer wear the mantle of self-protection

that justifies the exclusion of others,

but will, instead, regard the fate of others

as intimately connected with one’s own.

This desire for change is growing, now,

within an atmosphere of darkness

and unsafety that sanctions exclusion

in the name of security,

and that threatens and intimidates for the same reason.

In the end, it will be known to the collective

Heart of this nation that no one can be safe

unless all are safe.

The experience of safety will be seen to be a right

that must inherently belong to all, not just to

one class, or group, or ideology.

As this nation moves from darkness to light,

there is much that will need to be let go of

in service to each heart’s deeper truth.

The way through is to be attuned at all times

to the importance of love, to the power of love,

and to the rejection of all motives that are not

based in love.

This is the safeguard for the Heart of America

which beats even now within every inhabitant

of this nation.

It is this Heart which shall proclaim that

a society whose foundation is not based in love

cannot truly be democratic,

and that toward this end men and women everywhere

must now strive.
