The Central Role of ‘Harmlessness’

‘Harmlessness’ is a beautiful word. It is a proscription for a relationship to life that comes out of the recognition that all of life is one, that all of life is Divine, and that love and respect for the rest of life is the foundation of life.
Humanity has operated with a principle of self-protection and power on all levels of life, the inner psychological, the social interactive, within business, and between nations. Ego-defenses and the reinforcing of national security through military means are two parts of the same thing. Both are based on the idea of self-protection through strength or power. Harmlessness reverses this. It is based on reverence for life that determines to not deprive or diminish the life of any other living being.
