Coronavirus and You: A New Reality Being Born

In the midst of grief, loss, and sorrow, a new birth is taking place. The world is taking an evolutionary step forward. The idea is dawning in a deeper way that we matter to each other, that we affect each others’ lives in significant ways. A new view of human unity is being born.

In the midst of grief, loss, and sorrow, a new birth is taking place. In the midst of the heartache of those who have lost loved ones to Covid-19, the world is taking an evolutionary step forward. In the face of this complexity, we must learn to grieve with those who have not been able to say goodbye to family members, to honor the courage and commitment of those who are directly serving the sick, and to be grateful to those countless human beings who are performing essential services that keep our society going while the virus remains active.

This is a complex time that requires of us an open heart and a clear vision. Our open heart acknowledges the pain and difficulty of this time, not only due to loss of a loved one, but also to the fear of an unknown future generated by the loss of economic security. There are those who fear going hungry more than they fear contracting the virus. There are those who fear they may not work again in the foreseeable future. There are those who are afraid simply because the world has changed and we do not know what it will become.

In the presence of this flux, we, too, are changing. We are recognizing our helplessness and our strength. We are recognizing our bond with human beings, everywhere, who are going through the same experience that we are. We are becoming a human family. This does not mean that divisions and separations of ‘me’ from ‘you’ do not still take place. It means that we know, beyond doubt, that we matter to each other and affect each other by what we do or do not do. Our physical experience and restricted movement on a daily basis tell us that we are interacting with a world in which what we do affects those around us, and visa versa.

This sense of ‘mattering’ is not insignificant. It is vital. We wear face coverings. We space ourselves differently during conversations than we have before. We do not touch. We are cautious. We bear the imprint of knowing that we are all ‘in’ something together. Out of this crystallizing consciousness good is arising, the good that comes from identifying with the needs of others as well as ourselves. We are becoming more compassionate as we go through this crisis together.

In the presence of this flux, we, too, are changing. We are recognizing our helplessness and our strength. We are recognizing our bond with human beings, everywhere, who are going through the same experience that we are.

The evolutionary step forward that is taking place now is the creation of human unity. This awareness is being absorbed with a new level of reality. Human unity, human beings related to each other in the most essential ways. With this awareness, we take a step forward in our development as a species. This is one step, and there are more to come. The next step is to experience not only human unity, but the unity of the human and the Divine within us. For this to take place, we must have an experience of the sacred. The Divine as it affects human life must become more real to us. It must be recognized as the pervasive reality that infuses our daily life.

We cannot rush this step. We cannot force it. We can only allow it as we remain receptive to change and as we engage with the unknown. As we accept a changed and changing reality, we also let go of the control over life that we have wished to have, and this surrender becomes a stepping stone to the recognition of the sacred. For the sacred infuses the unknown and is part of it. It is the invisible force that governs life in all its forms. This awareness is yet to come. It is arriving. In the present time, our task is to commit ourselves to loving others in all the ways that are emerging, and to open our hands and our hearts to a reality that is changing day by day. Such acceptance engages us with the unknown on a daily basis as we struggle to deepen trust and search for it within ourselves in a new way. This trust in the unknown is part of the evolutionary step that we are taking. It is the Divine representing itself to our human consciousness. It is the world of the sacred coming into being. It is the recognition of each other in a new light and with a new sensibility. Thus, is a new world being born.
